Update 3: Coast Guard, partner agencies suspend searching for missing boater near Fire Island Inlet

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing person in the water near Fire Island Inlet, New York, Wednesday.

The 35-hour search was suspended at approximately 6:15 p.m., after search and rescue crews saturated a 388-square nautical mile area by air and sea with no results and no additional leads.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” said Capt. Andrew Tucci, commander Sector Long Island Sound. “We are deeply saddened by this outcome, and we appreciate the dedicated efforts and professionalism of all of those involved in the search”

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a report of a capsized 23-foot recreational vessel near Fire Island Inlet at approximately 6:00 p.m., Tuesday about. Two people were initially rescued from the capsized vessel told rescuers that another person was with them who was missing.
